So it is with men, we think we know right and wrong. We decide what is important to observe and what words of God can be disregarded. It is as common today as any feature of life for the word of God to be reasoned away. That was then, this is now; you have to look at the culture of the times the Bible was written in, etc. Unfortunately for those who let the words of Scripture drop, the Lord wrote in similitudes.

I have also spoken by the prophets,
and I have multiplied visions, and used similitudes,
by the ministry of the prophets.

Hosea 12:10

We, being created beings, are responsible to our God and Maker. Without God there is no moral law, no right, no wrong; with him there comes a moral imperative. Nonetheless, we cannot know what is right or wrong unless he tells us in some form or fashion. Hence, the great temptation in the garden.

Genesis 3:5 For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil

That many of the historical events recorded in the Scriptures are similitudes is of utmost importance to remember in your studies. The Bible was not written for the sole purpose of providing us with an historical record of the past, although its record is true. There are segments of history recorded for the purpose of providing evidence to the integrity of the Bible, as we discussed previously, however, many were recorded for the express purpose of revelation. They are for revealing God and just as importantly there are examples of the personalities and characters of men. It is much too easy to deceive ourselves, we need an accurate characterization. Additionally, many of the historical accounts are graphic representations of future, spiritual, or heavenly, events. As similitudes the Scriptures transcend all historical and cultural limitations; the commandments, doctrines and lessons of the Bible are eternal, as applicable today as when they were written. Its teachings cannot be dismissed on the tenuous excuse of historical progress or cultural bias, as many today attempt to do.

Precept and similitude, principle and example; it is the natural way to teach. Nothing has changed in the definitions of godliness, righteousness, modesty, honesty, humility, moderation, etc. Another aspect of not knowing right form wrong unless God reveals his moral laws to us is our sinning against him by not acknowledging him in all things.

Colossians 3:17 And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.

Proverbs 3:6 In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.

Remembering that the primary purpose of all creation is to glorify God, to act or perform an act of godliness, righteousness or charity and not publicly profess that you are doing so because you fear God, or love him, and that it is his law you are following in doing so is to rob God of his glory.

You may need to meditate on this for awhile. Not to give him credit is to glorify ourselves in that we are leaving the impression, whether by design or not, that we have the power and right to decide within ourselves what is right and wrong for us, what we should and should not do.
