God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.

John 4:24

The topic of Christmas has been covered extensively by many people for many years. Its pagan origins, its commercial value to the world, the fact that even the enemies of Christ celebrate it, all are indisputable facts. It is probably the second most emotional charged topic in society next to abortion. This study will not rehash these things. It will take a strictly biblical view. Should we as those who have trusted in the Lord Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of our sins, who claim our authority the Bible as being God’s word be associated with this rite called Christmas?

The short answer to this question is simply—No. You cannot honor our Lord by trying to put and keep him in something he was never in to begin with. There is a reason that the Bible does not preserve the actual day of the Lord’s birth, because God did not want us to observe it.

The fact his birth date is not given and no command to observe it is given brings us to our first point.

Proverbs 30:6 Add thou not unto his words, lest he reprove thee, and thou be found a liar.

Sufficient is the fact that God’s word does not tell us to celebrate or recognize his birthday in any form or way, which means to do so is adding to and diminishing from his word. Some may not realize that this is a serious offense with serious consequences.

Revelation 22:18-19 For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book: 19And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book.

To what extent this is to be taken who can say. It would be advisable though to stay far from any possibility of crossing any line that might exist.

The next point to consider is how to worship God, we can only worship him in, “spirit and in truth.”

John 4:24 God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.

Is there anything more physical and less spiritual than Christmas? It is all about physical representations and idols. Is there any truth in christianizing the pagan rite.

1 John 2:21 ..,that no lie is of the truth.

Is there any thing about Christmas that is not a lie?

  1. Were we told to recognize Christ birthday?—No
  2. Is Christ birthday within a month either way of December 25th?—No
  3. Were there three wise men?—No, the Bible does not say how many.
  4. Did the wise men see the baby in the manger?—No, they showed up two years later; that is why Herod had all the children two years old and younger killed.

Matthew 2:7-16 Then Herod,… enquired of them diligently what time the star appeared… 16Then Herod,… sent forth, and slew all the children… from two years old and under, according to the time which he had diligently enquired of the wise men.

  5. Is the Christmas tree in anyway associated with Christ?—No, in fact we are told in no uncertain terms not to have one.
  6. Is there a Santa Clause?—No, and what would he have to do with Christ?
  7. Are there flying reindeer?—No
  8. Are there elves?—No

If we tell our children all these lies, how do we expect them to suddenly believe that Jesus was the Son of God who died for their sins. We could be bolder in the faith and not associate ourselves with Santa Claus, reindeer, elves, etc., and celebrate Christmas with only the tree?

We must worship God in, “spirit and in truth,” “no lie is of the truth.”

At this point we have to consider the act of Christians recognizing the Xmas rite as adding to God’s word and that everything about the Xmas story is a lie. It is amazing that in the face of this that so many Christians have and continue to neglect God’s word. As for the tree, God’s word states that those that participate in this ritual are foolish brutes.

Jeremiah 10:2-8 Thus saith the LORD, Learn not the way of the heathen, and be not dismayed at the signs of heaven; for the heathen are dismayed at them. 3For the customs of the people are vain: for one cutteth a tree out of the forest4They deck it with silver and with gold; they fasten it with nails and with hammers,... 8But they are altogether brutish and foolish: the stock is a doctrine of vanities.

Here, more than six hundred years before Christ, we are told that the heathen have a rite where they put up a tree and do all the things done at Xmass with it. We are told not to learn their ways in doing so. Can anyone be so foolish as to say this description is not a similitude that we disobediently perform every year? Is this not a similitude of what we are not suppose to do? Will you feel comfortable standing before the judgment seat of Christ justifying your participation with, “yes, but I did not worship the tree,” that you, “did it to keep peace in the family,” “just did it for the children,” or “to keep people in Church!”

Matthew 10:37 He that loveth father or mother more than me is not worthy of me: and he that loveth son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.

There are many local congregations where they would not have any public displays or functions within the Church stating that whether or not one celebrate Xmas was a private matter, and let the flock celebrate it in their homes to make their parents, husbands, wives, and children happy without a word of admonishment. God hates hypocrisy, for they do not consider any other obedience to God’s word a private matter.

1 Corinthians 11:18-19 For first of all, when ye come together in the church, I hear that there be divisions among you; and I partly believe it. 19For there must be also heresies among you, that they which are approved may be made manifest among you.

As those that have trusted in the Lord Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of our sins there is but one purpose in life; to seek, live, preach and teach the truth of God’s word. Christ has never been in nor has any part, nor should we have, in the pagan rite of Xmas. The same applies for Halloween and Easter.
