Do we contribute anything to our own salvation?

For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.

Ephesians 2:8-9 KJV

Some will say that we must add faith, that would be incorrect. Believing something does not add nor does unbelieving take from anything; it is simply accepting or rejecting something as it stands.

Some will say we must work, keep God’s commandments. God says that he will not accept any man’s righteousness as equal to his. God can boast of his greatness, holiness, righteousness, but next to God man cannot.

Isaiah 64:6 But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.

Romans 9:32 Wherefore? Because they sought it not by faith, but as it were by the works of the law. For they stumbled at that stumblingstone;

Many continue to stumble.

No, we can add nothing to our salvation, accept, as stated, the need to be saved. If one does not believe he has a need for salvation he will not believe in a saviour.

Christ died to pay the penalty for all sins, the sins of the whole world. This, however, did not save anyone. It open the door of forgiveness of sins and salvation for everyone. All men pass from death, the condemnation of the law, unto life, sins paid for. Now each individual must turn to God for the forgiveness of sins.

Jude 1:5 I will therefore put you in remembrance, though ye once knew this, how that the Lord, having saved the people out of the land of Egypt, afterward destroyed them that believed not.

Romans 9:15 For he saith to Moses, I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion.

John 6:40 And this is the will of him that sent me, that every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life: and I will raise him up at the last day.

God simply preserved his sovereignty in adding in the condition that whosoever believeth will be saved. Those are whom he will have mercy upon.
